Google Play trader status declaration

All active Google Play developer accounts must declare in Play Console whether they are a trader or a non-trader under European Economic Area and United Kingdom law. Existing accounts must do it by February 1, 2027, wherever their apps are distributed, and new accounts do it at creation. Missing the date may trigger enforcement including app update blocks and removal from the Play Store globally. From March 1, 2027, the declared information is shown to users.

Deadline

The number of days is calculated in your browser from today’s date.

Google Play

Who is concerned

Every developer account, individuals and organizations. If you do not distribute apps in the EEA or the UK, you can declare as a non-trader.

Google cannot evaluate your business activities and recommends consulting a legal professional if you are unsure whether you are a trader.

What changes

  • Account level: declare your status in Play Console (Manage account, Account details, About you).
  • App level: if you are a trader, confirm the trader status for each app (select the app, Monitor and improve, Policy and programs, App content).
  • Traders self-certify that they only offer products or services that comply with applicable laws and give a link to the terms of service of each app. Personal accounts must provide a contact phone number, and the address is displayed publicly.
  • From March 1, 2027, users everywhere see a trader’s contact details, D-U-N-S number in the App support section and terms of service link. Users in the EEA and the UK also see the developer name in the Offered by field and the self-certification.
  • The October 29, 2026 announcement adds that starting in November 2026 you must declare your trader status in Play Console.

What to do

  • Decide whether you act for purposes of your trade, business, craft or profession. Google lists criteria from European Commission guidance: profit-seeking motive (paid apps, in-app purchases, ad-sponsored apps), transaction volume, business setup and legal status such as a D-U-N-S number.
  • Declare your status in Play Console before February 1, 2027 and keep it accurate. You can update it at any time.
  • If you are a trader, confirm the status per app, add the terms of service link and check the contact details Google will display.
  • Do not misrepresent your status: declaring non-trader to bypass verification or self-certification violates the Developer Distribution Agreement and may lead to account suspension or termination.

What happens after the date

Google’s FAQ says that failing to declare by the deadline may trigger enforcement including app update blocks and removal from the Play Store globally. If Google detects activity that suggests you are a trader while you declared non-trader, it may ask you to confirm or update your status, and your apps may be removed if you do not respond in time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the trader declaration the same as developer identity verification?

No. Google says it is separate: you do not redo the D-U-N-S verification, and if you are a trader the D-U-N-S number you already provided is displayed on your app’s page.

Why does Google ask developers worldwide?

Google says it supports Google Play’s transition to an online marketplace model in the EEA and the UK effective March 1, 2027, and that policies require all developers worldwide to declare.

Can I change my status later?

Yes. If your business model or app distribution changes, you can update the declaration at any time in Play Console.

Does Apple ask the same thing?

Apple has required a Digital Services Act trader status for apps in the EU since February 17, 2025. See the App Store DSA trader status page.
