Google Play Billing Library version deadlines

Every Google Play Billing Library version has a two-year deprecation cycle. Google’s table gives version 8 a new app and update deadline of August 31, 2027 and an extension deadline of November 1, 2027. Version 7 reached its deadline on August 31, 2026: since then new apps and updates must use version 8 or later, and the extension ran to November 1, 2026.

Who is concerned

Apps that sell through Google Play Billing, such as in-app purchases and subscriptions. Google says the dependency only appears in APKs that require the com.android.vending.BILLING permission.

What changes

  • A deadline makes a version unsupported for new apps and updates. Apps must use a supported version from Google’s table.
  • Version 7: August 31, 2026. Version 8: August 31, 2027. Version 9: August 31, 2028.
  • Unmaintained APKs do not need updates: existing apps still work, but new apps and updates must use supported versions.

What to do

  • Check the version in your build.gradle file: apps must use a supported version from the table.
  • Verify that AndroidManifest.xml contains com.google.android.play.billingclient.version. If it is missing, check whether manifest merging removes it. Google gives this as the fix for a deprecation warning when you already use a supported version.
  • Update the dependency and follow the release notes. Google links a migration guide for version 9.
  • If you need more time, open the extension form from the warning’s details page on the Policy status page in Play Console.

What happens after the date

After a version’s deadline, new apps and updates must use a supported version. If your app uses an unsupported version, Google shows a warning in Play Console.
