Google Play code optimization requirement: 25% minimum

From February 2027, apps and games on Google Play need to meet minimum optimization requirements: at least 25% optimization, 25% obfuscation and 25% shrinking for app uploads to Play Console. Google enforces it only where DEX code is non-negligible, meaning more than 10 MB for apps and more than 50 MB for games. Any tool can be used, and R8 is recommended but not required. Google gives the month, not the day.

Deadline

The number of days is calculated in your browser from today’s date.

Google gives the month, not the day. The count runs to the first day of the month, the earliest possible date.

Google Play

Who is concerned

Android apps with more than 10 MB of DEX code and games with more than 50 MB of DEX code. The requirement applies across all form factors.

Google says it understands that not every app or game makes heavy use of DEX code, so smaller ones are outside the enforced range.

What changes

  • A minimum of 25% optimization, 25% obfuscation and 25% shrinking for any app upload to Play Console.
  • Enforced only where the DEX size is non-negligible: apps above 10 MB of DEX code, games above 50 MB.
  • You can see your DEX size and your optimization percentages for each app bundle you upload in the app bundle explorer in Play Console.
  • Any optimization tool can reach the thresholds, for example R8 or another app shrinker.

What to do

  • Open the app bundle explorer in Play Console and read the DEX size and the three percentages for your latest bundle.
  • If you are below 25%, enable shrinking, optimization and obfuscation in your release build with R8, which Google strongly recommends, and tune with the R8 Configuration Analyzer.
  • If you publish through CI/CD or an enterprise pipeline, expect small differences between your local build and the build Play distributes, as Google warns.
  • Test the optimized release build before you upload it.

What happens after the date

Google explains that optimizing an app or game helps it load more quickly, use less memory, improve rendering and runtime performance and reduce ANRs. The article describes the requirement as upcoming and gives the month only.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use R8?

No. Google strongly recommends R8 for its optimizations and insights, and says other optimization tools can meet the requirement.

Does the 25% apply to every app?

It is enforced only where DEX code is non-negligible: apps with more than 10 MB of DEX code and games with more than 50 MB.

How do I see my numbers?

The app bundle explorer in Play Console shows the DEX size and the optimization, obfuscation and shrinking percentages for each bundle you upload.

Is there an exact day?

Not in the sources: Google’s article says “From February 2027”.
